Chelsea’s Star Players

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Chelsea’s squad is so packed with talent you may claim it’s hard to find the players that make the team work. In this article we take a look at five Chelsea players who seem to hold an inordinate amount of influence on how the team performs.

1. JOHN TERRY (England, Central defender)

Terry sets the benchmark with which the other players adhere to, captaining both club and country. A tough, uncompromising and brave defender, he has incredible skill and a technically sound style. His skill at stopping teams set players and fearlessly leading the team by example can be incredible, you could not find a better player to captain your club and country.

2. ASHLEY COLE  (England, Left back)

He may not be the most popular player amongst Arsenal fans, although he is still considered by many to be the best left back in the soccer world. At times he may struggle for confidence and form, but at his best his marauding runs down the left and quality balls into the box are only matched by his ability to shut down some of the world’s best players. In games against him the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been kept relatively quiet. That’s not luck, that is because Ashley Cole is a world class left back.

3. MIKAEL ESSIEN (Ghana, Central midfielder)

Injury robbed Chelsea of Essien for a large chunk of last season and his absence was keenly felt, despite the team being filled with outstanding midfielders. Essien balances the team perfectly. He is a technically gifted soccer player with a great work rate and defensive skill. He gets forward well and packs a powerful shot from distance. At today’s prices the 24.4 million pounds that it cost to buy him looks like a bargin.

4. FRANK LAMPARD (England, Central Midfielder)

Every team needs a midfielder like Lampard who can weigh in with plenty of goals, if they are to be successful. Lampard is one of the best around. He has shown a great return to form under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti and as a result his goal tally has been increasing dramatically. Frank Lampard is a vital source of attacking strength due to his accurate shooting and ability to link play with his strikers.

5. DIDIER DROGBA (Ivory Coast, Attacker)

It is hard to dispute the claim that Didier Drogba is the best striker in the world at the moment. Didier Drogba wearing the new Chelsea soccer jersey makes all defenders fear the upcoming game. He may be known for his ability to fall over during tackles and arguing with officials and opposing players but no goalkeeper wants him with the ball when he’s playing well. His presence, goals and power are a key element of Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea and at times this season, he has carried the team on his back. He alone may end Manchester United’s dominance of the Premier League.

Five world class stars to make up just under half of a world class team.

Should Michael Owen Be On The Team

Monday, December 28th, 2009

One unexpected transfer that took place last Summer was that of Michael Owen, the often injured striker from Newcastle United who made the move to the Red Devils.

Experts were left scratching their head at this decision by Sir Alex. After Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer the generally accepted view was that a big name would automatically pop in to Manchester United apparel to take over for him. Instead, United got Luis Valencia from Wigan and Michael Owen. A player who has been struggling with fitness and form over the last five years along with more injuries than one can count. The fact that he is a former Liverpool player only adds insult to injury. Their were a few unhappy faces from Manchester United fans when the transfer was announced.

When the deals fine print become known it became apparent that Alex Ferguson knew what he was doing. Michael Owen is intended to be used from the bench and is on a pay as you play deal at Manchester United. He would not be expected to bear the lone striking responsibilities, instead he would just assist when needed.

Only managing to play in a few games as a late substitute it was not the start the Michael Owen would have wanted. However his adoption into the United ranks seemed complete when he came on in the Manchester derby game to net a last minute winner for United to deny City a point at Old Trafford. This goal was expected to kick start more involvement from Owen in the team, their was even talk about a place in the England soccer team if he could find consistent goals.

However since then, it hasn’t really worked out for Owen. Only managing to score four goals from eighteen games this season (many of which he only appeared as a substitute however), Doubt is starting to spread on Alex Fergusons decision to transfer Michael Owen and how long he has left in the team.

Owen’s chances of regaining a place in the England team are getting slimmer by the day it seems. Fabio Capello has stated that his players need to be fit and playing well consistently in order to play for England.Owen has not managed to be do either of these over the last few years. Capello however does not seem to be consistent with all the players in the England squad, Emile Heskey seems certain to make the squad regardless of consistence and performance of Aston Villa.

Owen’s last minute goal against Manchester City has defiantly been the highpoint of Alex Ferguson’s experiment.Owen needs to find goals and consistency over the remainder of the season or it seems unlikely that Alex Ferguson will continue his experiment onto the next season, much in the way youngster Darron Gibson is doing. It’s up to Owen to prove he still has the fitness and ability to stay in the team, at the moment however, it seems likely that Sir Alex Ferguson’s gamble, in the long run, may not pay off.
